SHYAM RESTAURENT

WHAT TO SEE – We spot Shyam restaurant thanks to a board with the restaurant’s name hanging casually from the first floor wall and a focusing light placed strategically to ensure that the board is well-lit. Iron-stairs on the right hand side of the building lead you to this rather unassuming restaurant in Lingampally. Situated on the first floor of a three-storey building on the chaotic busy street leading to BHEL (Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited), the restaurant possesses no extraordinary exteriors. The interiors are very basic. There’s a seating arrangement for around 50 guests in their main dining area and there are two other cabins on both sides for family dining. Small circular multi-colored lights sit pretty on the ceiling.

What you get - Shyam Restaurant is a pure vegetarian Rajasthani restaurant with North Indian and Chinese dishes as well. The menu might sound a little amusing to you when you read their deliberate attempt for rhyming - like ‘Thand ho ya dhoop, khane se pehle soup or ‘Hum hain saath saath kurrum kurrum’ for soups and starters.

The North Indian menu includes 25 odd dishes for starters like paneer tikka, veg Karachi, hara bhara kebab etc and many other green vegetable dishes (Shyam wadi se hari sabji). Recipes from specific regions and cultures of North-Western India like Veg Kohlapuri, Marwadi Veg, Dum Aloo Kashmiri, Veg Jaipuri etc tend to reflect a native feeling among the Hindi speaking lot in Hyderabad. We’d however recommend the Rajasthani thali served at lunch and dinner for authentic Rajasthani dishes. They also have special thalis on Sundays with phulkas (Indian bread), besan ke gutte ki curry (gram flour based curry), dal bati churma (lentils, baked wheat balls and powdered sweetened cereal), kadhi (gram flour and curd based gravy) etc.

The other striking feature of Shyam is its prompt service. Anyone who visits Shyam would definitely get touched by the warmth and service of its waiters. Waiters here take care of small things like refilling your glasses of water, asking if you need extra phulkas, getting you extra salad, salt and pepper etc. It doesn’t take more than 20 minutes for your food to get served unless it’s too crowded here.

They also take catering services for various occasions and do home delivery within a range of 10 kilometers. The restaurant also houses a nine-room guest house on the second floor. They also have a sweet shop just a shop away from them on the ground floor for wrapping up your meal on a sweeter note.

Our verdict - Shyam restaurant though unassuming, serves delicious and authentic Rajasthani food. Service is warm and friendly. Romantic Hindi songs of 80s and 90s being played in the background and the colorful scanty lighting manage to create a pleasant ambience. On the whole, a complete budget dining option. The only concern is you’ll have to look for a parking space on the roadside.
